Documents Required : Australian Citizenship
Whether you are required to apply for Australian citizenship online or through paper application, the most essential part is to prepare your documents in accordance with the document checklist provided on the Australian immigration department website. For each category, there is a different document checklist. However, generally, all the required documents are categorized into following three categories:
Identity Documents
For this, you need to have three original documents that collectively show your photograph, signature, current residential address, birth name, date of birth, and gender. In addition, you also need signature of person with appropriate authority for your identity declaration. In case, you have changed your name recently then you need to provide additional documents for the same.
Acceptable identity documents include an Australian driver license,a passport, UNHCR document, a national identity card and other equivalent documents.
Character Documents
Before providing Australian citizenship, the Australian government ensures whether the applying person is of good character and whether he will uphold and obey the Australian laws, and other commitments made through Australian Citizenship Pledge.
Applicants need to obtain an overseas penal clearance certificate, or overseas police check in order to prove that they are of good character. Any applicant who is found to have been involved in criminal activities in past will not be given Australian citizenship.
Supporting Documents
If you are applying for Australian citizenship under a special category, then you need to submit additional documents to prove the validity of your case: Some examples of supporting documents include:
• To claim exemption from the residence requirement
• To provide evidence that you were an Australian citizen in the past
• To provide evidence that your parent(s) or grandparent(s) were Australian citizens
• To provide evidence that you have recently changed your name legally, etc.
Given that in different countries, there may be different nomenclature for different documents, it can get extremely complex to get all the relevant documents, in the right manner. Also, the Australian Government may ask you to show a document that your native country’s government doesn’t provide. In such cases, you need to provide an equivalent document.
