Subclass-804 visa enables legal citizens and immigrants of Australia to bring their aged parents to Australia. In order to apply for this visa, the applicant parent must:
Be in* Australia
Be sponsored** by his/her child living lawfully in Australia
Meet certain age requirements regulated by Australian government
Meet the balance-of-family test
* Applying parents must be on a temporary stay visa, which lets them apply for another visa. They must also be present in Australia when the visa is approved.
** The sponsor can also be a community organization, or spouse, or a guardian of applicant’s child.
In addition, the sponsoring child must be either:
An Australian citizen,
A permanent resident of Australia, or
An eligible New Zealand Citizen
In addition, the sponsoring child must have lived in Australia at least for two years immediately before the parent lodges the visa application.
The subclass 804 remains valid for an initial period of 5 years. After this period, you need to either apply for a resident return visa, or another valid visa to continue your stay. On the Aged Parent visa, you can stay, work and study in Australia indefinitely, as well as get access to free public health-care services by enrolling for Medicare. Subclass 804 visa also allows you to apply for Australian citizenship, as well as to sponsor eligible relatives for permanent residency in Australia.
