Subclass-187 visa, Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme, allows foreign skilled workers to have work and permanent residence permit in regional Australia. Under this scheme, immigrants can work in Australia except in the following regions: the Gold Cost, Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Wollongong and Melbourne.
The visa process for subclass 187 has two stages. In the first stage, a regional Australian employer nominates you for a skilled position. In the second stage you lodge your visa application. In case you don’t already have a job offer, you can first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Skill Select program to get nominated for a position.
You can apply for this visa under one of the following three streams.
Temporary Residence Transition stream: If you have worked in Australia on a skilled position for two years, for which you were nominated on temporary basis under subclass 457 visa, and your employer offers you the same position on permanent basis, then you become eligible to apply for subclass 187 visa under Temporary Residence Transition stream.
Irect Entry stream: You can apply under this stream if you
are a temporary resident in Australia but do not qualify for Temporary Residence Transition stream,
have briefly worked in Australia on a valid visa in past, or
have been nominated by an Australian employer under the Direct Entry stream
Agreement stream: You can apply under this stream if you have been sponsored by an Australian employer under the labor agreement.
In addition, you need to meet following requirements:
Your age must be below 50 (unless you are exempt*),
You must have vocational knowledge of English, and
You must have an adequate health insurance.
* You have been nominated under a special category, such as senior academic in an Australian University, or under a relevant labor agreement that allows people over 50 to be employed.
